今天我们聊聊英语中的拟声词

Oh yeah, in every language, we have “sounds” that can express how we feel.  Like in Chinese, 啊, 呀, 吧, 嗯, and so on, all have Chinese characters, to represent that sound.  We have those in English too.  They’re called onomatopoeia.  So today I want to teach you 10 of the most common “sounds” we use to express ourselves in English

uh-huh

This means “yes” or “yeah,” just like how  means yes in Chinese.

Example:

Cleveland:  You’re still thinking about your ex-girlfr

iend, aren’t you?

Cleveland Jr:  Uh-huh…

oops

This is the sound you make when you make a mistake!

Example:

Oops!  I didn’t mean to say “She’s hating him!” I meant to say “She’s dating him!”

doh!

This sound is from the Simpsons TV show, but now it’s super famous in almost all western countries.  Doh now is a sound of self-stupidity, you say it when you do or say something wrong and feel stupid for it.

Example:

Wait… you mean… my job interview was yesterday, not today???  D’oh!

grrr

Shows you’re frustrated or annoyed with something.

Example:

Grrr, overtime again, I’m never going to get to go home!

arg / argh!

This also shows frustration  and annoyance, but when you’re more angry, like you can’t take it anymore!  Rage!!!  (also it's the sound that pirates make)

Example:

Arg!  I hate these reports!  They never stop coming!  That’s it, I’m gonna quit!

ah

Just like  in Chinese, it expresses that you’ve realized or finally understand something.  Sometimes, of course, it could just be someone screaming “Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!”

Example:

You have to plug in the computer before turning it on?  Ah, that make sense actually…

Aww / ahhh

Like “ah” but longer, it can express disappointment; usually we say another word like “shoot, crap, man” after it.

Example:

She already has a boyfriend???  Awww mannnn! :(

hmmm / hrmmm

This shows someone is in deep thought, thinking about something.

Example:

Hmmm… which do I want… a pepperoni pizza, or a durian pizza?  Argh, they are both so tempting!!

ack!

This sound is similar to “argh!” except it shows more shock and surprise.  It happened suddenly and you’re still not sure what to do about it.

Example:

Ack!!!  I just dropped my new 20,000 rmb phone in the toilet!  What do I do, what do I do???

pfft

This is a “reply” sound that you make when someone says something you think doesn’t matter, or even might be so silly or stupid, that it’s the only thing you can say in response.  It can also show annoyance or disagreement.

Example:

I bet I could get the phone number of any girl in this bar!  -Pffft, you’d be lucky if they even looked at you.

Phew!  Finally done.  Oh no, I forgot “phew!”  This is the sound of being relieved, like “Finally! Thank God! It's over’!” So yeah, phew, finally we are finished.

Hopefully this will prepare you to understand a bit more internet English, and the funny sounds us English speakers make when expressing ourselves.
